Vintage Easter...Let's Look at the Easter Bonnet!


The history of the "Easter bonnet" actually goes back centuries. In the English tradition, the notion of getting new clothes on Easter to signify inner growth and renewal dates back to Shakespeare.

The tradition to wear a new hat at Easter was introduced to popular culture in the 1930's by the songwriter Irving Berlin, who wrote a song about the annual Easter parade in New York City.

Women, throughout the years have sported bonnets to wear to church services on Easter and in local parades. From elegant, to completely over-the-top!
